Steffi Chupein Artist Statement

Steffi Chupein is a mixed media artist, photographer, gardener, and a retired couples and sex therapist. Her passion for painting first evolved from a love of digital photography post-processing and is now, in her retirement, sustained by its inherent introspective quality. Self-taught, she has spent the last few years devoted to expressive abstract painting using mixed media techniques and collage.

Her paintings reveal a love of color, but also a layered complexity that evokes the therapeutic process, from trauma and vulnerability to an understanding that true self-awareness requires joy and sorrow be integrated. Her pieces
embrace the shadow and the imperfection in all things as well components that are partially revealed to the observer in the quiet conversations. Her work is influenced by the world around her. She will always find visual inspiration in nature, from the tiniest pistil to the ocean horizon.

Steffi works on wood or wrapped canvas. Multiple layers, sometimes as many as 50, and multiple techniques are used in each piece. Most pieces include collage, often with handmade and sourced papers.
