About the Exhibition

MAPAPA’s 2026 Annual Show Places & Spaces features paintings created en plein air by artists living and working throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

En plein air is French for “in the open air” and refers to the practice of painting outdoors to capture natural light, color, and atmosphere directly from life. Most of the works in this exhibition were completed in a single sitting, with artists responding to their surroundings over the course of just a few hours. Some artists return to the same location at a similar time of day to complete a painting while preserving the original light and mood.

About MAPAPA

The Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, or MAPAPA, is a vibrant community of outdoor painters dedicated to the practice of plein air painting.

Since 2003, MAPAPA has fostered creativity and collaboration among artists across the Mid-Atlantic region. The nonprofit organization includes members from Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, who meet at designated locations throughout the year to paint together and celebrate the varied landscapes, communities, and everyday scenes of the region.
