Beth Higgins is a mixed media artist living and working in Woodbine, Maryland. She has been an artist all her life and earned an art degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She has worked as a graphic designer and home stager—always in creative fields. Covid was a turning point and led her to make her art practice her main focus.
Embracing the idea of using things that would otherwise end up in a landfill, she upcycles them as art materials and transforms everyday items like soda cans, plastic bottles, plastic-coated wires, and other found objects into unique elements within her work. These unexpected materials create dimensional texture and bring depth to her canvases. By incorporating unconventional materials, she invites viewers to look more closely and discover the beauty in discarded items.
Inspired by nature, her pieces reflect the elegance and resilience of the natural world through her distinct perspective. She uses the term Eco Art to describe what she creates, with the goal of making art that not only captivates but also inspires people to recycle and care for the environment.
My mixed-media practice transforms discarded everyday objects—wires, charging cords, plastic bread tabs, mylar balloons, aluminum cans—into vibrant, textured and layered art. By reshaping these remnants of modern life into organic forms, I explore the tension between what we consume and what we cherish. Each piece becomes a small act of reclamation, proving that even the most overlooked materials can be reborn as something expressive, intricate, and alive.
At the heart of this work is a call to recognize our shared responsibility to protect the environment. The contrast between synthetic debris and the natural scenes they portray underscores the urgency of caring for the earth before more of it becomes disposable. These artworks invite viewers to reflect on their own relationship with waste, consumption, and stewardship, and to imagine a future where creativity and care help ensure a healthier planet for generations to come.
