SUMMARY:Summer Invitational Exhibition | Art Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Bernice Kish Gallery is pleased to present the Summer Invitational Art Exhibition 2026 — a juried showcase featuring a diverse group of Howard County–based artists working across painting\, drawing\, mixed media\, and contemporary abstraction. \nFrom luminous landscapes and expressive color fields to intimate graphite work and imaginative compositions\, the exhibition reflects the many ways artists interpret the energy\, warmth\, movement\, and atmosphere of summer. \nRather than focusing on a single style or medium\, this invitational brings together distinct artistic voices in one thoughtfully curated exhibition — offering visitors a chance to experience both variety and connection within the local arts community. \n  \n\n🗓 Exhibition Dates: July 1 – August 9\, 2026🎉 Opening Reception: Saturday\, July 11 | 3–5 PM | RSVP: https://forms.gle/6hmBuvaWMpd2v6YTA

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk | Beth Higgins | Garden of Reclaimed Things
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk | Saturday\, Apr 29\, 2026 | 3-5 PM\nRSVP: https://forms.gle/sCFzuirxVvBY6VoX9 \nBeth Higgins is a mixed media artist living and working in Woodbine\, Maryland. She has been an artist all her life and earned an art degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She has worked as a graphic designer and home stager—always in creative fields. Covid was a turning point and led her to make her art practice her main focus. \nEmbracing the idea of using things that would otherwise end up in a landfill\, she upcycles them as art materials and transforms everyday items like soda cans\, plastic bottles\, plastic-coated wires\, and other found objects into unique elements within her work. These unexpected materials create dimensional texture and bring depth to her canvases. By incorporating unconventional materials\, she invites viewers to look more closely and discover the beauty in discarded items. \nInspired by nature\, her pieces reflect the elegance and resilience of the natural world through her distinct perspective. She uses the term Eco Art to describe what she creates\, with the goal of making art that not only captivates but also inspires people to recycle and care for the environment. \nLearn more here.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception | Anne Calamuci – The Portrait’s Ability to Reveal
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Dates: January 6\, 2026 to February 22\, 2026\nReception Date: January 11\, 2026 at 3:00 pm\n\nRegister for Reception\n\n\nAnne Calmuci’s work in conceptual portrait photography is rooted in spirituality. She creates images that explore the inner life. \n\nThe series Ageless Creativity features 24 female artists ages 55–89. The series celebrates the female spirit and reminds us that women over a certain age are still imaginative\, passionate\, and full of life. \nAgeless Creativity was created with LED flashlights using a technique called light painting. This process allows the painting of light to create a luminous\, otherworldly atmosphere. \nPortraits can capture what cannot be spoken. Anne enjoys creating images that invite the viewer to look beyond the surface.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk | Echoes of Light & Line
DESCRIPTION:A two-artist exhibition featuring sisters Hima and Nishita Jain. Though their subjects differ—portraits and landscapes—their work shares a contemplative sensitivity and a reverence for quiet moments. \nHima’s pencil portraits capture the dignity\, character\, and quiet strength of individuals from varied walks of life. Each drawing is rendered with extraordinary care\, inviting viewers to pause and connect with the depth of expression etched in graphite.’ \nAfter a successful career in IT entrepreneurship\, Hima returned to her early love of drawing and painting during the quiet pause of the pandemic. This reconnection with her creative roots reignited a lifelong passion for observing and expressing the world through art. Her current work goes beyond visual representation—it seeks to convey the spirit of her subjects and the subtle interplay of light and shadow that brings them to life. \nNishita’s watercolor landscapes evoke fleeting light and shifting atmosphere. Her work explores place as emotion—layered washes\, softened forms\, and tonal transitions convey both solitude and serenity. \nWith a focus on tonal nuance and fluid brushwork\, Nishita uses the inherent softness of watercolor to evoke emotion and place. Her distinctive approach continues to resonate with viewers\, drawing the attention of both collectors and fellow artists. \nNishita is also an art instructor\, teaching watercolor techniques to adult students at both beginner and intermediate levels.  \nTogether\, these works offer a visual meditation on stillness and presence—whether in the lines of a weathered face or the mist over a morning field. \nGallery Talk: Nov 15\, 2025 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 AM |\nRSVP required

SUMMARY:HoCo Native Landscaping Tour: Wilde Lake\, June 15
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 15 | 9-11AM | Additional information about the tour available at 2025 HoCo Native Landscaping Series \nCome see what our neighbors in Wilde Lake’s Running Brook neighborhood are doing to support pollinators and our environment through native landscaping! \n\nFrom Wilde Lake CARES:\n \n\nThe Howard County Landscaping Tour is in Wilde Lake this Sunday\, June 15th from 9:00 to 11:00 am.  The houses are all in Running Brook and we will be giving out free Threadleaf Blue Star (Amsonia hubrichtii) plants. \nEach of the three properties is different\, but all are Bay-Wise certified and Bee City registered. Each has projects to mitigate stormwater runoff and has replaced sections of lawn with native trees\, shrubs and perennials. \nYou can expect to see a beautiful sidewalk planting strip (aka hellstrip)\, a small pond with native aquatic plants\, layered gardens surrounding the houses with native perimeter and foundation plantings\, and a cul-de-sac with violets as groundcover rather than grass. Use this link for complete details:  2025 HoCo Native Landscaping Series. \nEach tour is mostly self-guided. Homeowners will be there to answer questions and help you get the most out of each visit. Homeowners interested in seeing how native plants help with stormwater management while blending in beautifully with traditional landscaping techniques are encouraged to attend tours in their neighborhood and beyond. \nParticipating homeowners contribute to the health of our climate\, environment\, waterways\, and beneficial wildlife. They have removed many invasive plants\, improved soil health\, and controlled stormwater runoff and erosion. \nThanks to Chesapeake Bay Trust’s Community Engagement and Restoration Grant and Howard County Bee City\, and additional support from community sponsors\, we will be giving out $10\,000 worth of free native plants to tour visitors.  In addition to a free quart-sized native perennial for the first 55 households at every yard\, there will be a lottery with the opportunity to win a free native tree\, shrub\, or $25 gift certificate. \nNo RSVP required. This event is rain or shine! Please consider carpooling as parking is limited\, or bike or walk (CA Pathways resources and map).
